Welcome to the Macmillan 4x4 Challenge 2011 which will start again this year at BRITPART, The Grove, Craven Arms, Shropshire. SY7 8DA Grid Reference: SO 433 848
As in previous years, it will be made up of a mixture of navigational and observational tasks, details of which will only be given to crews immediately before they start each task – surprise is the keyword!
Due to the implementation of money laundering legislation, each participant will need to produce evidence of identification in the form of a passport or photo card driving license.

The Registration Form (which will follow later in the year) can only be completed by those who have already:-

  • completed the MAC 4x4 Application Form on the website – www.mac4x4.co.uk
  • paid the entry fee and
  • received confirmation of their Team Number from Peter Rowland.

You should read these Regulations and once you have your entry confirmed by Peter Rowland and received them, complete and return the Motor Sport Registration Form (final 3 pages of these Regulations - to be issued later) which is required by the Motor Sports Association General Regulations.

Supplementary Regulations

Article 1           ANNOUNCEMENTS
MARCHES 4x4 Motorsport Management Ltd (`the Club') will promote a Clubsport Navigational Scatter on Thursday 03 March 2011, Friday 04 March 2011, Saturday 05 March 2011 and Sunday 06 March 2011.  This will be a challenge event.

Article 2           JURISDICTION
The event will be held under the General Regulations of the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association Ltd (‘MSA’) (incorporating the provisions of the International Sporting Code of the FIA), these Supplementary Regulations and any written instructions the Club may issue for the Event.

The event is open to members of Marches 4x4 Motorsport Management Ltd only.  The registration fee will include club membership for the crew members for the balance of the current year to 30 November 2011.

Article 6           START AND FINISH
The event will start at Britpart, The Grove, Craven Arms, Shropshire. SY7 8DA Grid Reference: SO 433 848
The event will finish at The Daresbury Park Hotel, Daresbury, Cheshire.

Article 7           SCRUTINEERING AND DOCUMENTATION
7.1        Scrutineering and documentation will begin at T.B.A. hrs on Thursday 3 March 2011.  Documentation will close at t.b.a. hrs on Thursday 3 March 2011. At signing on competitors must produce identification comprising a passport or photo card driving licence.  DUE TIME FOR EACH CAR WILL BE t.b.a. hrs plus start number in minutes.  Penalties for lateness will be given at the Clerk of Course’s discretion.

All vehicles must carry the following equipment:-
  • Compass
  • Ruler
  • Pencils
  • Rubber
  • Romer (an aid to accurate grid referencing)
  • Safety warning triangle
  • Suitable tow rope
  • First Aid Kit
  • Shovel
  • Torch
  • Fire Extinguisher
  • Extra warm clothing
  • Extra waterproof clothing
  • Sleeping bag or blankets
  • Litre of clean drinking water per person per day
  • Black plastic bags in which to keep own rubbish during event
  • Toilet paper and other personal requisites
  • Flask of warm tea / coffee / sweeteners / milk etc to own liking

7.3        At Documentation Organisers' / sponsors' plates and decals will be issued for each competitor to apply.
7.4        Vehicles must be presented at the start in a clean condition, with no previous door plate number decals which mention Macmillan 4x4 challenge on their vehicle.
7.5        Parts of the event will take place during the hours of darkness or in dark areas and vehicles should be equipped with suitable lighting but note Article 20 which also applies.

Article 8           ROUTE
The route will be contained on a Phillips Navigator Britain Atlas of 1.5 miles to the inch.   There is no prescribed route for the event, this being a scatter event.
Total mileage will be less than1000 miles.
The event will contain several off road sections on private property; results will not depend on the fastest speed however a maximum time may be allowed for each section to prevent the convoy becoming too extended.
Vehicles will start sections at such intervals as the Organisers, at their discretion, may decide.

Competitors are reminded that, whilst sections of the event may be held on private land, the principles of the Highway Code remain and drivers must drive at all times with due care and attention for other persons using those roads, whether in the event or not.  Sections may have footpaths or bridleways crossing the roads or tracks and therefore walkers, horse riders, tractors and other forestry, farm or estate traffic can be expected.

The route will be defined on a series of maps.  Full details of the route will be issued to competitors prior to the start of each section.  These documents will contain all the information necessary to enable competitors to navigate the route.

Article 9           RECORD CARDS
Each crew is solely responsible for any record cards issued during the event. Therefore, it is up to the crew to submit its card to the marshals at the correct time, and to check that the details are correctly entered. The control marshal is the only person allowed to enter the information on the card, by hand, at control points.

Article 10          IDENTIFICATION
Vehicles will be identified by event plates supplied by the organisers. 

Article 11          GROUPS, CLASSES & VEHICLE ELIGIBILITY

  • The event is open to 4x4 vehicles, whether designed principally for the transportation of passengers, commercial use or dual purpose.  Such vehicles should be registered as PLG or Historic.  Saloon cars and car derived commercial vehicles are prohibited.  A current VED licence must be displayed and, where appropriate, vehicles must possess a current MOT certificate.
  • All vehicles must comply with MSA General Regulations.

Article 12          MOTORSPORT REGISTRATION
Registration is only open to those who have already completed the MAC 4x4 Application Form on the website, www.mac4x4.co.uk , paid the fee and received confirmation of their Team Number from Peter Rowland.

Motorsport Registration opens on publication of the Motor Sport Registration Form (see note on page 2) and closes finally on 26 February 2011.

The entry fee already paid to Mac 4x4 c/o Peter Rowland is £250.00 which includes club membership of Marches 4x4 Motorsport Management Ltd for the two Crew members to 30 November 2011.
All persons who may drive at any time during the event must have the compulsory Lockton Insurance at £ t.b.a. per person and payment of such premium/s must be made with the Motor Sport Registration Form.
All entries must be made on the official registration form and accompanied by the appropriate fee.
The maximum entry is t.b.a. plus t.b.a. reserves.

All entries will be acknowledged within 7 days of receipt and confirmation of entries will be made as soon as possible.  

Entries are at the discretion of the organisers, and entries may be refused without any reason being given.

Article 14          AWARDS

Special Awards will be given for different activities on each day.  Additional awards may be given at the Organisers' discretion.

Article 15          RESULTS
Results will be published and the presentation of awards will take place at the Presentation Dinner on Sunday, 06 March 2011.

Article 16          CONTROLS AND TIMING
These will be in the discretion of the Organisers and details given when appropriate.  There is no requirement to visit every section.  Penalties for missing a section will be detailed in the Final Instructions.

Article 17          FINAL INSTRUCTIONS
Final Instructions will be e-mailed to competitors 7 days before the event.

Article 18          INSURANCE
The Motorsport registration form will only be accepted if it is accompanied by the total fees. The premium for the compulsory insurance specified below is £t.b.a. per person driving during the event (guide cost - £27.30 in 2010):-
The organisers have made arrangements to insure, jointly with the sponsors and other parties as necessary, competitors and drivers against third party risks whilst taking part in such parts of the event as are held on private lands or on roads specifically closed for the purpose.  The indemnity provided under this special insurance is £30,000,000 covering any one incident or occurrence.
The insurance cover will come into effect from the start and will cease at the end of the event or at the moment of retirement, disqualification or exclusion.
Competitors wishing to insure against the risks of personal accident during the event may do so by making application to

The promoters decline liability in any accident caused by or to competitors and the competing cars during the whole of the event.  The promoters also decline any liability for breach of the laws and regulations of the UK as covered by the itinerary.  Competitors shall be held responsible for any accident or breach of laws in which they may be involved and shall declare to the promoters particulars of any incident from which liability may arise and shall have no claim against the promoters arising out of any action of the promoters, their servants or officials, during the course of the event.  Entrants and competitors will be required to sign the following declaration: -

  • I have been given an opportunity to read the General regulations of the Motor Sports Association and, if any, the Supplementary Regulations for this event and agree to be bound by them. I declare that I am physically and mentally fit to take part in the event and I am competent to do so.  I acknowledge that I understand the nature and type of the competition and the potential risk inherent with motor sport and agree to accept that risk.  Further I understand that all persons having any connection with the promotion and/or organisation and/or conduct of the event are insured against loss or injury caused through their negligence.
  • To the best of my belief the driver(s) possess(es) the standard of competence necessary for an event of the type to which this entry relates and that the vehicle entered is suitable and roadworthy for the event having regard to the course and the speeds which will be reached.
  • The use of the vehicle hereby entered is covered by insurance as required by the law which is valid for such part of this event as shall take place on roads as defined by the law.
  • I understand that should I at any time of this event be suffering from any disability whether permanent or temporary which is likely to affect prejudicially my normal control of the vehicle, I may not take part unless I have declared such disability to the Royal Automobile Club Motor Sports Association Ltd which has, following such declaration, issued a licence which permits me to do so.
  • Any application form for a licence which was signed by a person under the age of 18 years was countersigned by that person’s parent/legal guardian/guarantor, whose full names and addresses have been given.
  • If I am the Parent/Guardian/Guarantor of the driver I understand that I shall have the right to be present during any procedure being carried out under the Supplementary Regulations issued for this event and the General Regulations of the MSA.  As the Parent/Guardian/Guarantor I confirm that I have acquainted myself with the MSA General Regulations, agree to pay any appropriate charges and fees pursuant to those Regulations (to include any appendices thereto) and hereby agree to be bound by those Regulations and submit myself without reserve to the consequences resulting from those Regulations (an any subsequent alteration thereof).  Further, I agree to pay as liquidated damages any fines imposed upon me up to the maxima set out in Section Z.

Note: Where the Parent/Guardian/Guarantor is not present there must be a representative who must produce a written and signed authorisation to so act from the Parent/Guardian/Guarantor as appropriate. Furthermore, in respect of any parts of this event as shall take place on ground where third party insurance under the Road Traffic Acts is not required by law, this agreement shall in addition to the parties named above extend to all and any other competitor/s and their servants and agents and to all actions, claims, costs, expenses and demands in respect of loss or damage to the person or property of myself, my driver(s), passenger(s), or mechanic(s) or associated personnel.

The organisers have applied to Lockton for a Blanket Cover Note to provide competitors with the Third Party Cover necessary to meet the Road Traffic Act requirements on the Road Sections of the Event.
The basic rate for the event (before any loadings) will be £t.b.a. (guide cost - £27.30 in 2010)

Competitors must be able to comply with all points of the Lockton’s Declaration: -
1 – Over 21 and held a full licence for at least 6 months;
2 – Not more than 1 fault accident in last 3 years;
3 – No more than maximum of 6 speeding points on licence;
4 – No physical or mental disabilities; and
5 – No other material facts.

If ABLE to comply with all points above, competitors can simply sign the Signing On Form for insurance – No letter of acceptance will be issued.

If UNABLE to comply with any of the above points, competitors must complete a Lockton Declaration Form and return this, fully completed, to Lockton in sufficient time prior to the event for a Letter of Acceptance to be issued. Faxed documents will be acceptable.

The Brokers require at least 21 days clear notice of applications by E U nationals.

This insurance is compulsory for all drivers, i.e. if there are two in each vehicle, each must be able to comply with this declaration and sign the declarations in this entry form and sign on as a driver at Event Office at the start of the event.

Article 19          INTERPRETATION OF REGULATIONS
It is not the duty of any marshals to interpret regulations or any other written instruction to the competitor or to explain the meaning and/or effect thereof.  It is the responsibility of the competitor to read and understand the regulations and any other written instruction.

Article 20          ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Amendments to the Regulations - Supplements.
By the very act of signing the entry form, the entrant, and crew members, submit themselves to the sporting jurisdiction specified in the International Sporting Code and the prescription of the present regulations only.
Radio equipment used by competitors on the event may well be checked by the Radio Communications Agency.
Laptop computers will NOT be permitted on this event. No more than 2 forward facing spotlights to be used on the public highway. This will be strictly enforced. Any queries please contact the Clerk of the Course.

Article 21          ADVERTISING
Competitors are allowed to affix any kind of advertising to their vehicles, provided that:
21.1      it is authorised by the national laws and the MSA Regulations;
21.2      it is not likely to give offence;
21.3      it does not encroach upon the spaces reserved for plates and competition numbers;
21.4      it does not interfere with the crew's vision through the windows;
21.5      tobacco advertising is not allowed.
At Documentation, Organisers' / sponsors' plates and decals will be issued for each competitor to apply for the duration of the event only.
